Situation: Matte Painting done for a TV soap opera project at Globo Studios in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Task: based on the Banespa building in São Paulo in 1945. The project consists of reproducing the architecture around the building and the scaffolding used in construction at the time.
Action: I collected original images of the city of São Paulo from the 1940s to create an image bank of reference bases, textures and elements that could be used to create the matte painting. I cut out the elements from my image bank that would be used, created masks for all the elements and made the montage, correcting the values and colors to match the original footage. I worked with the 3D team to define the assets that would be used in the scene, such as the sign in the foreground and the Hotel sign.
Result: This project was challenging in terms of studying and collecting reference images. Reconstructing the entire building in the background was extremely manual work, with a lot of digital painting and piecing together small image clippings, creating a real puzzle.
